I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a physician and an antiquarian bookseller. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Far Eastern Studies and Mandarin from Yale University. After a career in the New York publishing world (Time Inc., Scholastic, and Holt, Rinehart & Winston, among others), I fell in love with Mexico and, from there, with the Spanish language, Latin American literature, and culture. In the early 1990s, I worked in art management and education at El Taller Latino Americano on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. I taught Spanish and translated documents for a variety of clients, including Sony Records, The Children’s Television Workshop, and hospitals throughout the city. In 2019, I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the College of Arts and Letters at Sewanee: The University of the South. I now devote myself to my own writing and to translating works by contemporary Hispanic writers, particularly women who emphasize our stories and the social issues that affect us. I am currently an associate professor of literary translation at New York University’s School of Professional Studies.
I passionately believe in the power of literature to change the world for the better, the power of creative collaboration, and the right of creators to receive fair remuneration for their work. My translations are done by a human being, for the benefit of humanity and the planet.

I am delighted to be your ally and collaborator in achieving our mutual goal of helping Hispanic literature travel across borders to find new readers. The author-translator relationship: Translating is to know another person deeply. It is beneficial for an author to work with a single translator to establish a literary dialogue and mutual understanding. Therefore, it is common to find author-translator teams who consistently collaborate. Personally, I sometimes collaborate with trusted colleagues when working on a translation.
Commissioning a sample translation of a book of around twenty to thirty pages is essential for connecting with publishers and media companies abroad and selling the English rights. I offer my expertise in creating and translating the information sheets that usually accompany such samples. I cannot promise that a title will be published in English; however, it is well known that the best results are obtained when the publisher and the translator work closely together.
My profession is literary translation, but I also have other skills: I am a liaison between the various players in the publishing industry. I often act as an unofficial agent for authors and as a talent scout for North American publishers.
I charge a fee for all aspects of my work. Rates and contracts are matters negotiated between the publisher and the translator and vary depending on the complexity of the text, the deadline, and my availability. Every wine, mole, and book is unique—just like every translator! I am an accomplished writer with extensive literary knowledge and training, so I bring my own linguistic and poetic DNA to every translation.
